In western medicine, sinusitis is defined as inflammation of the lining of sinuses in the face, caused by viruses, bacteria, or allergies. Some cases may be said that their condition is also related to deviated nasal septum, nasal polyps, cystic fibrosis, etc. The common symptoms include nose congestion, postnasal drip, runny nose, pain/tender/swelling around the eyes/cheeks/nose/ forehead, reduced/lose sense of smell/taste, other symptoms may include ear pain, headache, aching teeth, cough, sore throat, bad breath, tiredness, etc.
In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), sinusitis is referred to as “ Bi Yuan” (鼻渊), “Nao Lou” (脑漏). We emphasize the obstruction of Qi (energy flowing) due to imbalance of inner organs system, underlying constitution, plus the attacking of exterior pathogenic factors (wind, cold, dampness, heat, etc.) The imbalance of the inner organs system, and constitution, contribute to this disease as the main reason. Sinuses inflammation, nasal polyps, cystic fibrosis, or deviated nasal septum, are the results of the whole pathological process, not the original pathogens. Based on these opinions, our treatment usually is not only focused on the sinuses area.
Sinuses belong to the lung functional system (not only anatomical lungs). However, in our human body, if the lung system wants to work normally, it must cooperate with other organ systems, like spleen, kidney, liver, heart, to get a balance. That means, for sinusitis, the first closely related system is lung system, but also may relate to other functional system disorders (see picture at left side). For different cases, the imbalances could be different. So please do not limit your TCM doctor what acupoints or what formulas to use when they treat you. Although all sinusitis patients have some common symptoms, every person is special!
Dr Wang has long term experience and lots of successful cases in treating sinusitis with acupuncture and herbal medicine.
